At certain points in our lives, the changes in our bodies which affect our minds, which affect our bodies, can be overwhelming – or, at least, cause us anxiety and concern. Age-related milestones can also negatively influence our perception of our identity. Our programmes help individuals to identify with their values – helping them to live a rich and meaningful life.

Sleep has an enormous effect on everything in our lives. If we are well rested we have more mental and physical stamina and higher productivity levels. We are capable of being more emotionally resilient and cognitively creative

Long-term sleep problems negatively affect our health, our mood, our thoughts – really, our day-to-day existence. Lack of sleep is a body state (although it can have a huge detrimental effect on our psychological state). We work with both the biological and psychological influences that lead to poor sleep.

– [ ] NISAD Stress Unit www.nisad.org/units/stress
Unlike anxiety, which is when we have high levels of concern about our future, stress is a human mechanism to increase our effectiveness – even when we may not be on top-form. Stress is good until you have too much of it (think of stress as being like the fuel in your car – too much and it floods and won’t go!) Excess-stress is often noticed as a feeling of just not being able to cope.

– [ ] NISAD Stress-in-Pregnancy Unit www.nisad.org/units/stress-in-pregnancy
There is a reason why this unit is not just a sub-unit of our Stress Unit – stress in pregnancy is a modern challenge that requires specialist treatment – and we have been doing this for well over a decade. When a woman experiences high levels of stress, or continuous lower levels, studies show that the child, once born, is likely to be less content and more fractious from birth and are less able to cope with stress right into adulthood. This is because the stress hormone, cortisol, is not stopped at the placenta – so an unborn child receives the same levels of cortisol as her or his mother.

We have a hugely supportive specialist clinics to reduce the sort of stress that increases the production of cortisol by expectant women.
