Valentine's 2021 - time to love yourself

Well, here we are in the month of February and this Valentine’s Day, in particular, may be more
challenging than others.

February 14th has become one of the most commercialised dates in the western calendar. It’s amazing how much attention is given to one day.

As children, we might have been feeling excited about getting a card from someone who “liked”us.

If we look around at our friendship circles today, many of us, as adults, may be on our own,
dating the “wrong” person, separated, or divorced.

So perhaps we are giving too much emphasis to our relationship status, as these things can change. And we certainly don’t want to feel judged for our relationship status having changed!

On the one hand, wouldn’t it be better if we thought about showing love, affection and kindness every day?

And more importantly, how can we expect someone else to love or like us if we don’t particularly love, or even like, ourselves?

“How do I do this?” you might ask.

There are many ways to love and be kind to ourself.

There is no right or wrong way. Self-love is about showing regard for one’s own wellbeing and happiness. It’s about caring about ourself no matter what imperfections or flaws we may imagine we have. It’s important to know that, at any point, we are doing our best with what we know at the time. It’s helpful to be able to forgive ourself for any mistakes we may have made and learn from them. As we keep developing and growing into the person that makes us happy, we develop a greater appreciation for ourself as our strengths and talent come to light. Your happiness will radiate out to all of those around you.

If we make ourself our own priority, love ourself and know that we are enough, then we have a greater capacity to be there for others when they need us. Remember the saying that you can’t pour from an empty cup. It’s ok to take time to fill your cup when you need to.

Whatever the restrictions this year due to Covid-19, we can still find ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day with our special someone – ourself!
