ELK-Health is the name for the clinics and programmes that we at NISAD create

Stress in pregnancy is a modern challenge that requires specialist treatment.

Stress hormones in the body can cause long-lasting developmental effects for our unborn child.

You’re pregnant…

How are you feeling? Tired? Excited? Overwhelmed?

Pregnancy is a special and joyous time but can also be filled with worry and anxiety – particularly with the additional uncertainties caused by the Coronvirus pandemic.

Fluctuating hormone levels, physical discomfort and uncertainty about the future can all contribute towards feelings of stress during pregnancy.

Looking after the baby may feel like your most important task during pregnancy but it’s just as important to look after yourself and think about your own needs.

We all hope for pregnancy to be a safe, happy time, but life still throws us curve-balls and hassles.

A certain amount of stress is very normal for us to experience, but when that stress becomes too much, it’s really important to take action and manage our stress levels during pregnancy.

High levels of stress

When a woman experiences high levels of stress (or even continuous lower levels), studies show that the child, once born, is likely to be less content and more fractious from birth and is less able to cope with stress right into adulthood.

Stress hormones in the body can cause long-lasting developmental effects for our unborn child.

This is because the mother’s stress hormone, cortisol, does not stop at the placenta. Which means that a baby in utero receives the same levels of cortisol as her or his mother.

The main aim of our support clinics is to reduce the amount of cortisol crossing the placenta.

Supportive specialist clinics

We have hugely supportive specialist clinics to reduce the sort of stress that increases the production of cortisol experienced by mothers during pregnancy. And we’ve been doing this for well over a decade.

CalmBaby programme

The CalmBaby programme and our CalmBaby clinics (online and face-to-face) work with both bio-medicine, to measure levels of stress hormones, and evidence-based methods which are proven to reduce and manage stress.
